Emily Altman is a mediator and arbitrator in New York City who brings more than 30 years of hands-on international and domestic Wall Street experience to her practice as a neutral. Extensively trained in mediation and arbitration, Altman combines a deep understanding of business and finance with expertise in negotiating with a diverse range of individuals and groups.
Her practice ranges from multi-billion dollar mortgage-backed securities cases to disputes involving breach of contract, insurance, real estate, securities sales and trading, bank fraud, intellectual property, employment contracts, private equity investments, and partnership and family business issues.
Mediating since 2011, Altman spent over a decade as Head of International Government Relations and a Managing Director of JPMorgan Chase and, before that, Head of International Government Relations for Morgan Stanley, negotiating with the US government, foreign governments, regulators and other global financial institutions on transactions and issues central to the businesses of the banks and their clients. She has also been a Senior Policy Advisor at Fleishman-Hillard, the global communications firm, where she advised the firm's clients on US and international financial services reform issues. She began her career at Davis Polk & Wardwell, where she practiced international and domestic banking and securities law for more than a decade.
She is a Special Master at the Appellate Division of the New York State Supreme Court, First Department, a FINRA arbitrator, and a mediator for the Commercial Division of the New York State Supreme Court, New York County.
A native New Yorker, Altman is a cum laude graduate of Harvard College and a graduate of Columbia Law School, where she was a member of the Law Review. She clerked for Judge Jack B. Weinstein of the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She is a member of the New York State Bar.
She is President of The Frederick Loewe Foundation, a grant-making organization that owns and licenses the theatrical and musical properties of the composer who, with lyricist Alan Jay Lerner, wrote such Broadway and Hollywood musicals as My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon, Gigi and Paint Your Wagon.
Altman sits on the Board of Directors of Supporters of Civil Society in Russia which supports the Moscow School for Civic Education and has been a member of the Boards of Directors of numerous organizations including the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, the Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Business Council for International Understanding, the American Council on Germany, the US-Russia Business Council and the American Turkish Society.
She was Chair of the International Committee of SIFMA (the Securities and Financial Markets Association) for seven years, served on the US Department of Commerce's International Trade Advisory Committee (ITAC-10), and has worked with the United Nations as a private sector advisor on sovereign debt. She has been a resident Special Advisor to the Minister of Finance of Lithuania, lectured on project financing throughout Eastern Europe and served as an election observer in Bulgaria and Albania.
Altman is the recipient of the Fulbright Award for Global Business Cooperation and the Securities Industry Association's Distinguished Leadership and Chairman’s Awards.
